Financial planning and analysis

An FP&A function that explains the past with facts and plans the future with confidence, with planning and analysis designed to work together.

The challenge

Financial planning and analysis needs both a fact-based look back and a forward-looking view. Doing both well takes coordination across process, stakeholders, data, analytics and reporting. When planning and analysis are tangled together, cycles drag, hierarchies and account mappings drift, and variances get reported without being explained.

How we approach it

Our design framework separates planning from analysis and focuses on the inputs and outputs of each. The results of the planning cycle become inputs to analysis.

  • Planning inputs: assumptions, reporting hierarchies, chart of accounts and account mapping, cycle and time horizon.
  • Planning outputs: budget, long-range plan, forecast and scenarios.
  • Analysis inputs: actuals compared with those plans, plus internal and external drivers.
  • Analysis outputs: an executive summary, variances with interpretation, and exceptions.

We use the framework to assess where you are today, then help with process design, application selection and implementation where needed.

Questions we help you answer

  • How does our FP&A process compare with best practice?
  • Why did results differ from budget and forecast?
  • Which internal and external drivers matter most to our plan?
  • Do we have the right applications to support planning and analysis?
